Ex-works A40 AOF947 (alf)

Post02 May 2015 09:53

Hi
I am wondering whether any body out there in a40 land can help me with some information. Back in the early 60's my uncle, Roy Edwards, owned and competed in an ex-works A40, reg no JCJ 34, the car was previously AOF 947 he purchased the car from a dealer named David Haim from Coleshill who apparently sold a few BMC factory cars. When Roy was finished with it he sold the car to Jim Blockley ( historic single seater fame ) who competed with it and when he was finished with it he part exchanged it with a dealer in Bristol, John Chatham I believe, and from there the trail runs cold.
I appreciate back then the value of such cars was very little and probably went the same way as many others but who knows!

Hello Eddie, welcome to the forums and I hope one of the inmates will be able to shed more light on your uncle's A40. Do you know approx which year the car went to the Bristol dealer John Chatham? You're quite right in assuming it probably vanished from sight around then, especially as such competitive cars used to be stripped of their (usually expensively modded) mechanicals and the body dumped.

However, it might have gone to another private owner but, again, such a fiesty warhorse doesn't normally make for an easy daily driver, and the seller wouldn't normally go to the trouble of re-installing standard mechanicals just to sell the car on.

One of our Club members, David Lewis, is very knowledgeable on racing saloons and is currently in the throes of researching/writing what promises to be a magisterial book on the subject. He might well spot your query and may be able to add more info to that you already are aware of.

Whatever, many thanks for eliciting our help; I do hope the Club can be of use to you.
Secretary Keith.

Thanks Dave - beat me to it. I've only just recovered from the mild heart attack of seeing that huge image of the devil that appeared in your posting!!

Not really, David Lewis advised to start from the beginning and get the chassis number because it may exist in a different form. Fair point considering all the rally bits could have been robbed and the reg number probably sold. David's main interest is circuit cars and not rally cars. I will have to see how far my uncle wants to go with this. David did say that the sister car ZOE exists in Ireland with a collector.
