[quoteWelcome Steve. Lets have some details of your car please ...... :D
( Don't suppose it's one of the RARE Camper conversions is it ? ][/quote]

Hi All, no rare camper here sorry, it's a 59 mk1 sedan with a tidy body (red/black, originally Rheims Beige/black) assembled in Sydney, it has a 1098 ( apparently bored to 1140, with a 12g295 head, early cooper cam, rib box and
sprite front end/brakes) it's a work in progress after 3 weeks of ownership. So far all I've done is rebuild a scary (had to use both hands to return from full lock lol) steering box and convert it and the idler to modern seals. Currently looking into converting to a minor diff as it still has very worn out mechanical brakes.

That's a nice engine spec Steve. Is it perhaps a Midget/Sprite 10CC block ?? ( Bigger main bearing crank journals, ergo :- stronger bottom end !)
It's not so much the Minor diff you want, the A40 Mk2's rear brakes, ( or Midget/Sprite ), are the ones to go for. A 3.9 diff from a Midget/Sprite.....Dec 68 to Aug 77......is the one to go for. There is also a 3.7, which would also be ok, but they're scarce, and probably more so in Oz !

Thanks Ed, Hi Dave, yes from the paper work I was supplied it's a mk2a sprite block. Never seen a Mk2 in Aus & I don't think they were sold here, I believe the spridget diffs are too narrow but because I already have a 4.22 diff head I was thinking a minor axle housing would be best as they're very common here and brake parts & axles are easy to come by.
I believe they're wider but do they fit within the guards with standard sprite wheels? also will the spring seat/mount need changing/relocating?
Also should this be a separate thread?

Some difference in terminology

AU UK
Diff -------------- rear axle (complete)

Diff head ----------- Diff assy

As suggested the simplest method would be to convert to A40 Mk2 brakes but the original hydro/mech sytem when set up properly is as good as the full hyd system

Ah yeah, sorry axle housing.
My main concern is weak standard axles and the limited availability here, all a30/a35/farinas are VERY thin
on the ground here Mk2s don't exsist and the weak exchange rate + freight from the UK mean uprated items are prohibitively expensive.

Yes, half shafts, ( those either side of the axle unit, not the "prop shaft" from diff unit to gearbox ), are not too strong. Midget axle casings are about 2" longer, so Midget half shafts can't really be used, as there will be insufficient contact in the diff unit. I have modified a Midget axle casing so as i can use Midget half shafts. Uprated A40 ones are available over here.........but expensive.
All diff units are interchangeable.

Have ordered rear brake shoes from bullmotif, I hope the mk1 & the A30/35 are the same.
If the axles break I'll re-evaluate my options then as it can be tricky getting rego here with any
mods that involve welding suspension related parts I.E. relocating/rewelding spring platforms
if that's required to fit a minor or any other diff.

hi steve, i dont know but can you get ford axles out there like mk 1/2 cortinas/tornus anglia/100/105e these can be fitted with a little fettling but with these you can get a wide range of final drive ratios if you didnt want to stay with the bmc units
