Austin A40 Farina Club "celebration" 10th SEPTEMBER 2017

Post11 Apr 2017 21:42

A get together/picnic if the weather is kind, at the home of Lord Nuffield, William Morris who headed up BMC.
The house is modest and gives insight into the man who gave away most of his wealth whilst he was creating it. Has the same carpets as when he moved in!
The gardens are being restored and we have free use of those as well as the opportunity to park on the gravel at the front!

DO make a date in your diary and an A40 you convoy is planned starting from Henley Railway station at 11.00

ALL WELCOME!

Currently a huge argument in Bennett Towers as Bar attempts to forbid my attendance (due to a bad chest infection) but I reckon the prescriptions will have kicked in by Sunday - and as I told her, I don't need to breath to drive! Just expect an unusually quiet editor and - if Bar joins me - a rather grumpy wife!

In the event, a very satisfying day out in good company. The weather held off until home-time and so we were able to explore the house and gardens. Everyone said how much they'd enjoyed Liz's meeting and we're going back there again next year. Here's Liz's report and some pictures . . .

Dear all,
A huge thank you to all who attended the first event of an embryonic group covering Bucks, Oxon and Berks... BOB.
Despite a rather dismal weather forecast FIVE beautifully preserved A40s attended our first event. Three of us, Derek Minter, Nick Griffiths with grand daughter Becky and myself drove.....not sure if three cars count as a convoy, through Henley town to Nuffield Place which was the rather modest home of Lord Nuffield (see edition 150 for more details)
We were then joined by Tracy and her navigator Rupert (they didn't have a satnav but I understand that plans might be in place to install a discretely sited cigarette lighter) and Keith and Bar in "Gab" drove onto the crunchy gravel. Keith should have been at home in bed but decided that he couldn't miss my Victoria sponge. (Thank you goes to Mary Berry who is moving to Henley very soon)
We had our picnic under cover and had a grand time swapping car and motorbike related tales and it managed to stay dry until we all went on our way.
Guided tours of the house had been undertaken, coffees and A40 models bought but it was agreed that the house and gardens needed more time and so it was decided that to arrange another visit in 2018
Our cars caused quite a stir and one little girl really loved our cars and wanted her picture taken in the front seat! We shall also be featured in a NT magazine. Paul Cook a NT volunteer and a former A40 owner (twice!) donated two fabulous magazines which featured our cars.
It's 50 years since production of our lovely cars was stopped and I can't help wondering if somewhere hidden in the archives there is THE letter signed by Lord Nuffield
Now we need a date and sunny weather for next year's picnic!
