Fitting Spridget fuel tank

Post18 Jan 2017 20:23

Hi Folks,
I have a '60 Mk1 which I'm re-commissioning, and the fuel tank is 'iffy' - I've made a few repairs, but it's still weeping a bit, so I think I have to accept it needs a new Tank. Of course, in their wisdom, BMC made the A40 tank just ever so slightly different from the Spridget ones....

It looks like the Spridget tank should bolt straight in, if I enlarge the hole in the boot floor slightly towards the centre line of the car (the MG tank not having the side projection or fixed neck of the A40 one)

But my query is, does the MG filler neck fit between the tank and the filler neck hole in the rear panel?

Anyone done the swap?

I've spoken with the ever helpful Derek, but if anyone else has any of the following, do let me know:

Front anti-roll bar
Grey or blue Carpet set
Interior trim panels in grey or blue
any way of gettting an Ebay seller to send you details so you can arrange to get the heater you've bought collected......

Many thanks,

Al

Can't help with questions Al, sorry, but will add that a Frogeye tank has a fixed filler pipe. Whether it suits the A40 hole in the back panel i know not......

Regarding the neck, is it possible to use the original neck from the A40 tank ? cut it off and just use a flexible hose to join to the Spridget tank ? all the work is inside the boot so not visible and I know there are many sizes and angles available for the hose.

Midget & Sprite filler pipes are connected to the tank with a large rubber hose, ( about 4" long ). Frogeyes are the exception.

Bullet has been bitten - tank ordered. I'll keep you posted with any dramas (inevitably, there will be dramas!)

Did you order the early type so you can re-use your sender unit ?
