Dear All,
We will now have at least 7 cars............convoy from Henley Station or direct to Nuffield Place (in any car!)
We will have cake (s)
We will have VIP guests
We will have sunshine
We will talk about A40’s

Thanks you in advance for coming along and I understand that it’s difficult to attend such events. The event will no doubt be covered in the next issue of our FAB magazine!

Mr Fenwick checking out if an A40 drivers seat is comfortable!
A great plan ......well executed! A big thank you to the team who enticed our VIP guest to attend and tell us all about his adventure in an A40!
Books were bought, signed by Chris Fenwick. Cakes were cut and the sun kept shining!
There were 7 cars lined up on the gravel driveway and 400 visitors to Nuffield Place enjoyed admiring them.
Paul Mazey and Derek took some amazing photos!
A grand day out!

After the success of Club member Liz Smith's first picnic which she held last year (as seen in our quarterly Club magazine FN 151, pp.13-14] in the grounds of the National Trust house ('Nuffield Place', once the beloved home of William - later Lord Nuffield, founder of the eponymous car manufacturer - Morris and his wife Elizabeth) she decided to hold another one this year at the same venue. The staff gave us their usual warm welcome and were happy for us to park the Austins in front of the house (we listened carefully but couldn't hear the previous owner spinning in his grave at such cheek!). As usual, the cars attracted much public attention especially as Liz had inadvertently chosen for her picnic date the Trust's free day for all to enter their properties at no charge. Naturally this increased the footfall considerably and we were to benefit from that.

... and when they did, the cars provided great interest (and memories!)

The house is a relatively small and very homely building in which the Trust has carefully preserved the everyday items which formed the couple's modest possessions. Morris suffered from insomnia and so converted the built-in wardrobe in his bedroom to a mini-engineering shop at which he could create and experiment with any ideas rattling around in his head. Everywhere one expected to see the Morrises return home after a trip out, so well have the Trust preserved the rooms and their casually-left contents.

This picnic, however, was different in that we were all delighted to meet one Christopher Fenwick who, along with two friends from university days, drove across europe, asia, India and Africa in an Austin A40 Farina just to honour an invitation to a friend's wedding in Johannesburg. See the thread (below) in this forum entitled "20,000 miles..." for the full story.

Yours truly acting as easel to Chris Fenwick during his talk.

The weather stayed warm and sunny, so we gathered in the shade of the gardens' trees for our leisurely picnic and talk. Liz had baked two scrumptious cakes - an A40 anniversary one and a divine lemon drizzle.

The master baker herself!

We hope that she will be encouraged to repeat her picnic next year - whether we'll be at Nuffield Place or not depends entirely on her. But from all of us who enjoyed the day, thanks Liz and here's to the next time!
